a memory | i carry your heart
this past weekend we went to a wedding (i posted a few details on instagram but it was very beautiful- so intimate, colorful, and we had a blast!!) during the outdoor ceremony, a friend of the bride read the poem, i carry your heart by ee. cummings. this poem means so much to my sister and i (our friendship is so special to me) and was read at both of our weddings. i was so excited to hear it read again at another wedding. today, parks and i are road tripping to cincinnati to visit my sister and her husband… so when i heard that today’s prompt was to share a recent photo, video, or memory that brought emotion… i decided to share these photos with you. i recently found them on my phone and they made me so happy to relive. the night before my wedding day, after the rehearsal, my sister and i jumped on the bed together… as my dad snapped a few photos. these photos. i will always cherish these.
i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go, my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)
as kids, we shared a room (until i was 15 and she was 13) but we always wanted our own rooms. looking back, i am so glad that we were forced to share. i think it taught us a lot of life lessons and helped make us better individuals in many ways. my parents were big believers in no locks on kids’ bedroom doors, no tvs, and the importance of sharing all of our things. again, not ideal at the time, but i am very thankful for all of this now. most importantly, we grew so close as a result…. as we enjoyed pillow talk nightly, while listening to teddy ruxpin, saying our bedtime prayers together, reading books, and giving one another a back massage (we would set the timer to make sure it was ‘fair.’)
throughout life, whenever something good or bad happens, my sister is the one who is always there for me. she is so encouraging and always believes in me (esp. lately). i am so thankful that God picked her to be my sister… there isn’t a day that goes by that i don’t think, ‘how lucky am i to call her my sister.’
i love you, sweet sister.
(and thanks for being the best auntie to parks!)
is there a picture or memory that means a lot to you?
and if you got married, how did you spend the night before?
(and if you haven’t, i highly recommend doing this with your maid of honor!)
